Audi A2
The Audi A2 is a discontinued Audi model which was first introduced to the market in February 2000. The A2 is a five door hatchback under the supermini car classification. It has a hatchback body style and can be found with the following engine sizes: 1.4 L petrol, 1.6 L petrol 1.2 L diesel and 1.4 L diesel.
The design of the A2 was based on a concept car – the Audi A12 which Audi first showcased in 1997 at the Frankfurt Motor show. The A2 was recognised as an economical vehicle thanks to several of its notable design features such as the lightweight aluminium body and efficient engines.
Germany released the A2 under three packages: ‘Advance’, ‘Style’ and ‘High Tech’. Later Germany introduced the ‘S Line’. The A2 was produced on a purpose-built line at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant in Germany.
Thanks to its aluminium and aluminium alloy construction, the A2 weighed significantly less compared to other cars of a similar size.
The A2s structural skin is made from a considerable amount of aluminium and aluminium alloy. This choice of lightweight material means the A2 weight significantly less than cars of a similar size. In turn, this reduced weight makes the A2 much more fuel efficient than cars made from steel.
When the A2 was first released onto the market it received excellent reviews with Autocar reporting that ‘it’s a great car to look at, sit in and touch, but it’s also a riot to drive’.
Unfortunately while excellent for reducing fuel consumption, aluminium products are also a more expensive to manufacture. This meant that the price of the A2 was significantly higher than that of other vehicles in its distinction. When first brought onto the market, the A2 competed with the Mercedes A-class and Audi were reported to be disappointed with low sales levels of their new model.
Why are A2 numbers falling?
Despite Audi discontinuing the A2 line, one of the main reasons for the falling number of A2 models in the UK is again down to its aluminium structure. If damage occurs to the aluminium chassis or shell, it requires the work of an aluminium specialist to bring it back to life and the number of people with this specialist knowledge and training are few and far between. To put it into perspective, only one aluminium specialist exists in the whole of Scotland. This makes recovery of damaged A2s difficult and thus many are written off once damaged.
We think the rarity and unique design of the A2 makes it a really special vehicle with a lot of character.
