Audi A1
Audi’s A1 supermini first made its way onto the market in 2010 where sales of the three door model were launched in Germany and the UK. In 2011 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the five door version was revealed and sales were launched the following year. Although the five door A1 is technically a hatchback body style, the model uses the name ‘sportback’ – a term Audi adopted to reflect the more sporty, stylish design of their hatchback models.
The first concept car that helped to form the A1 was the metroproject Quattro. The model was displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007. It featured a plug-in hybrid powertrain including a 1.4L Turbo engine powering the front wheels and a 40 bhp electric motor powering the rear. Both power sources can be used simultaneously.
The vehicle uses lithium-ion batteries and is able to travel up to 62 miles at up to 62 mph, reducing fuel consumption by 15%.
In 2008 Audi unveiled their second concept car the A1 sportback at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The model was based on the project Quattro (the renamed version of the metoproject Quattro). It featured a longer body style, a two-part spoiler, a single-flame grille with aerodynamic design, three-dimensional headlights and turbine-look air vents. The car was presented in a Daytona Grey body colour with a contrasting white and red interior.
The powertrain featured a 1.4L turbo FSI engine with 150 horsepower and electric motor with 27 horsepower driving the front wheels.
In 2010 the three-door A1 was launched at the Wörthersee Tour and Paris Motor Show. It went on sale the same year in most markets and in Taiwan in 2011. The sportback version was displayed at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show and went on sale the same year.
